Amritsar, literally meaning the "Pool of Nectar," is the spiritual and cultural capital of Sikhism. Founded in the 16th century by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, the city has grown around the sacred Amrit Sarovar (Holy Tank), after which it is named. Take time to admire the magnificent architecture, experience the peaceful atmosphere, and witness the remarkable community kitchen (Langar), where thousands of visitors are served free meals every day regardless of religion, nationality or social background. Continue to the nearby Jallianwala Bagh, a poignant memorial dedicated to the victims of the tragic massacre of 13 April 1919, a defining event in India's struggle for independence. Walk through the beautifully maintained gardens and visit the memorial, museum and preserved bullet marks that stand as a reminder of this significant chapter in Indian history.

Later, enjoy some free time for lunch and, if desired, explore Amritsar's bustling local markets, famous for traditional Punjabi textiles, handcrafted souvenirs and authentic local delicacies.

In the late afternoon, drive approximately 30 kilometres to the Wagah Border, the international border between India and Pakistan, to witness the famous Beating Retreat Ceremony.

Every evening, soldiers from the Border Security Force (India) and the Pakistan Rangers perform a highly choreographed military ceremony featuring energetic marching, ceremonial drills and the lowering of the national flags. Accompanied by patriotic music and enthusiastic crowds, this unique spectacle is one of the most memorable experiences in North India.
