In contrast, New Delhi, designed by the renowned British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, is known for its broad tree-lined avenues, elegant government buildings, impressive colonial architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens.
As the political and cultural heart of India, Delhi offers visitors a fascinating introduction to the country's diverse traditions, heritage and vibrant lifestyle. Although your stay today is primarily for rest before beginning the sacred pilgrimage, the city provides a perfect starting point for the memorable journey ahead.

Journey to the Gateway of the Gods
After an early breakfast, begin your sacred Char Dham pilgrimage with a comfortable drive from Delhi to Haridwar, one of the seven holiest cities in India and the traditional gateway to the Char Dham shrines of Uttarakhand.
Leaving behind the bustling capital, travel through the fertile plains of North India as the landscape gradually changes from busy towns to peaceful countryside. Along the way, enjoy views of green agricultural fields, local villages and small roadside markets before reaching the foothills of the Himalayas.
Situated on the banks of the sacred River Ganga, Haridwar literally means "Gateway to Lord Vishnu (Hari)" and is regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Hinduism. It is here that the holy River Ganga leaves the Himalayan mountains and enters the plains, making the city a place of immense spiritual significance. For centuries, saints, sages and pilgrims have visited Haridwar to seek blessings, perform religious rituals and take a holy dip in the sacred river.
Upon arrival, check in at your hotel and enjoy some time to relax before proceeding for local sightseeing.
Chandi Devi Temple
Your first visit is to the famous Chandi Devi Temple, one of Haridwar's most revered Shakti Peeths. Perched atop Neel Parvat, the temple offers magnificent panoramic views of Haridwar, the flowing Ganga and the surrounding hills. Devotees can reach the temple either by ropeway (cable car) or by trekking approximately 3 kilometres from Chandi Ghat.
Dedicated to Goddess Chandi, the temple is believed to mark the place where the Goddess defeated the demons Chanda and Munda. Thousands of devotees visit every year to seek blessings for courage, protection and prosperity.
Bharat Mata Temple
Continue to the unique Bharat Mata Temple, unlike any other temple in India. Spread across eight floors, the temple is dedicated to Mother India and honours the country's rich heritage, great saints, freedom fighters, legendary heroes and cultural traditions. Each floor represents a different aspect of India's glorious history, making it both a spiritual and educational attraction.
Shantikunj Ashram
Later visit Shantikunj Ashram, the spiritual headquarters of the All World Gayatri Pariwar. Established by Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya, the ashram is an important centre for meditation, yoga, spiritual learning and social service. Today marks one of the most significant moments of your Char Dham Yatra as you visit Yamunotri, the first of the four sacred shrines and the revered source of the holy River Yamuna.
Begin your day early with breakfast before driving through the scenic Himalayan roads to Janki Chatti, the starting point of the trek to Yamunotri. The drive itself is a delightful experience, offering breathtaking views of deep valleys, cascading waterfalls, snow-fed streams and dense forests. The fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings create the perfect atmosphere for the spiritual journey ahead.
Upon reaching Janki Chatti, begin the 6-kilometre trek to Yamunotri Temple. The well-laid path gradually ascends through beautiful mountain landscapes, flowing rivers and lush greenery. Along the route, pilgrims can pause to admire the spectacular Himalayan scenery and enjoy the soothing sound of the River Yamuna flowing alongside the trail.
For those who prefer not to trek, Pony, Palki and Doli services are readily available on direct payment, making the pilgrimage accessible for senior citizens and those requiring assistance.
As you approach the temple, the magnificent Himalayan surroundings and the spiritual atmosphere create a truly unforgettable experience.
Yamunotri Temple
Located at an altitude of approximately 3,293 metres, Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the goddess of the sacred River Yamuna. The shrine is beautifully nestled amidst towering snow-covered peaks and forms the westernmost shrine of the Char Dham circuit.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Lord Surya (the Sun God) and the sister of Yama, the God of Death. It is believed that taking a holy dip in the waters of the Yamuna and offering prayers at Yamunotri grants spiritual purification and protects devotees from untimely death.
The present temple was originally built during the 19th century and has been reconstructed several times following damage caused by natural calamities, while preserving its spiritual significance.
Offer your prayers, seek the blessings of Goddess Yamuna and spend some peaceful moments amidst the divine surroundings.
(Temple Timings: Approximately 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM)
Jamunabai Kund
Before entering the temple, many devotees take a holy dip in Jamunabai Kund, a natural thermal water tank located near the shrine. The warm water is believed to possess medicinal properties and is considered sacred before offering prayers at the temple.
Surya Kund
One of the unique attractions of Yamunotri is Surya Kund, a natural hot water spring with temperatures reaching nearly 90°C.
Pilgrims traditionally tie rice or potatoes in a small cotton cloth and immerse them in the boiling spring water. Within a few minutes, they are cooked naturally and later offered to the Goddess before being taken home as sacred Prasad.
This fascinating natural phenomenon has attracted pilgrims for centuries and remains one of the most memorable experiences of the Yamunotri pilgrimage.
Divya Shila
Before entering the temple, devotees pay their respects at Divya Shila, a sacred rock pillar situated near Surya Kund. Worshipping Divya Shila before seeking darshan of Goddess Yamuna is considered an important ritual and an integral part of the pilgrimage.
The Source of the River Yamuna
Although the actual source of the River Yamuna lies at the Champasar Glacier, approximately one kilometre beyond Yamunotri at an altitude exceeding 4,400 metres, the difficult terrain makes it inaccessible for most pilgrims. Therefore, devotees offer prayers at Yamunotri Temple itself, which is revered as the symbolic origin of the sacred river.
After completing your darshan and spending time amidst the tranquil Himalayan surroundings, begin your descent back to Janki Chatti.
Upon arrival, meet your driver and proceed back to Barkot, enjoying once again the beautiful mountain scenery along the way.
Reach your hotel by evening, where a warm dinner awaits.
After a spiritually fulfilling and physically rewarding day, relax and prepare for the next stage of your Char Dham pilgrimage.

Prakateshwar Mahadev (Shiv Gufa)

Unlike most temples, this naturally formed limestone cave is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is famous for its naturally occurring Shiva Lingam. The cave is adorned with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years through natural mineral deposits. The cool interior, peaceful surroundings and spiritual ambience make it a unique stop on the journey.
Devotees believe that offering prayers here brings inner peace and divine blessings. Spend some time exploring the cave temple and experiencing its serene atmosphere before continuing your journey towards Uttarkashi.
Arrival in Uttarkashi
By afternoon, arrive in the holy town of Uttarkashi, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,158 metres above sea level.

Believed to be over a thousand years old, this sacred temple attracts thousands of devotees every year. The temple houses a magnificent Shiva Lingam and is known for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful Himalayan setting.
Adjacent to the temple stands the ancient Shakti Temple, famous for its enormous Trishul (Trident), believed to have been gifted by Goddess Durga after defeating the demons. Arrival in Guptkashi
By evening, arrive in Guptkashi, a beautiful Himalayan town located at an altitude of approximately 1,320 metres above sea level.
Meaning "Hidden Kashi", Guptkashi holds great religious significance. According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to absolve themselves of their sins. However, Lord Shiva wished to avoid them and concealed himself at Guptkashi before eventually appearing at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. This legend makes Guptkashi one of the most important spiritual destinations on the route to Kedarnath.

According to Hindu mythology, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the destruction caused during the battle. Joshimath – Gateway to Badrinath
En route, pass through the historic town of Joshimath, one of the four important monasteries established by Adi Shankaracharya.

If time permits, you may briefly visit:
Narsingh Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu's Narasimha incarnation.
Adi Guru Shankaracharya Math, an important spiritual centre established during the 8th century.
Continue your scenic drive towards Badrinath while enjoying magnificent views of the Himalayan mountain ranges.
Arrival at Badrinath
By afternoon or early evening, arrive at Badrinath, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,133 metres.
Nestled between the majestic Nar and Narayan Mountain Ranges, with the towering Neelkanth Peak standing majestically in the background, Badrinath is one of India's most sacred pilgrimage destinations and one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
After checking into your hotel, take some time to relax and acclimatize to the higher altitude.
Tapt Kund
Before visiting the temple, many pilgrims take a holy dip in Tapt Kund, a natural hot water spring located near the temple entrance.
Despite the cold mountain climate, the sulphur-rich water remains naturally warm throughout the year. It is believed that bathing here purifies both the body and mind before seeking the blessings of Lord Badrinarayan.
Evening Darshan at Badrinath Temple
Proceed for darshan at the magnificent Badrinath Temple, one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Spend some time offering prayers and soaking in the divine atmosphere before proceeding to explore the nearby spiritual and historical attractions that make Badrinath much more than just a pilgrimage destination.
Mana Village – India's First Village
A short drive of approximately 3 km brings you to Mana Village, the last inhabited Indian village before the Indo-Tibetan border.
Home to the indigenous Bhotia community, Mana offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional Himalayan way of life. The village is known for its stone houses, narrow lanes, woollen handicrafts and warm hospitality. Vyas Gufa (Cave of Sage Vyasa)
Visit the revered Vyas Gufa, where it is believed that Maharishi Ved Vyasa composed the great epic Mahabharata, while Lord Ganesha acted as the divine scribe.
The naturally formed cave has been a centre of meditation and spiritual learning for centuries. Even today, devotees and spiritual seekers visit the cave to experience its peaceful atmosphere and historical significance.
Ganesh Gufa
Located a short walk from Vyas Gufa is the sacred Ganesh Gufa, where Lord Ganesha is believed to have written the Mahabharata as Sage Vyasa dictated the verses.
This small yet significant cave is another important spiritual landmark that reflects the rich mythology associated with Mana Village.
Bhim Pul
Continue to the famous Bhim Pul, a massive natural stone bridge spanning the roaring Saraswati River.
According to legend, during the Pandavas' final journey towards heaven, Bhima placed this enormous rock across the river so that Draupadi could safely cross the turbulent waters.
Standing on the bridge, visitors can witness the powerful flow of the Saraswati River as it rushes through a narrow rocky gorge, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle.
Saraswati River Origin
Just beyond Bhim Pul, witness the sacred Saraswati River, one of Hinduism's most revered rivers.

(Optional and subject to weather and fitness conditions.)
Brahma Kapal
On returning to Badrinath, visit Brahma Kapal, one of the most sacred ritual sites situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River.
Many pilgrims perform Pind Daan and rituals for their ancestors here, believing that these sacred ceremonies help attain peace for departed souls.
